The Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) launched Can’t Wait to Read, a statewide campaign showing parents and caregivers why their kids need to experience reading, starting when they are just a few months old. The campaign also elevates the abundant reading resources available across the state and lets parents know they have what it takes to give their kids a successful future.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read about 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think (so get started).

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers

Kid's book

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is an annual statewide program sponsored by the State Library of Kansas that promotes reading to all Kansas children from birth through age five. Parents, librarians, and caregivers are encouraged to read the chosen title during the month of November.

6 by 6: Ready to REad

The Six Skills
Have Fun with Books
Notice Print All Around You
Talk, Talk, Talk
Look for Letters Everywhere
Tell Stories About Everything
Take Time to Rhyme

In efforts to help children aged birth to six years of age prepare to read, the State Library of Kansas adapted the local 6 by 6: Ready to Read program created by Johnson County Library to a statewide early childhood literacy program now available to every public library in Kansas. 6 by 6 is a parent-friendly early literacy program modeled after the national Every Child Ready to Read @ your library program. This program emphasizes the six skills that parents and caregivers can help children develop, before they learn to read, at about the age six.
